Some Helpful Auto Insurance Tips
Auto Insurance 101
To begin with an auto insurance policy is simply a package of different coverage. This is the first and most important point. Let me clarify just a little bit. It is a COLLECTION of DIFFERENT COVERAGES. Meaning that you wont always want or need all the various coverage offered. Auto insurance is compulsory in nearly ever state. The reason is that it forces every one to be financially responsible for any damages they might do with their vehicle either to persons or property. Each state will have a minimum liability coverage requirement and these can differ from state to state. If you cause an accident your insurance will cover the expense to the others involved. This leaves you still needing repairs or replacement of you own vehicle. This is where collision and comprehensive come in. These will pay for you expense in part or in whole. On an older car that is not worth more than $2500 this maybe not be needed or desired but on a more expensive vehicle it can be a good thing.
Auto Insurance Basics
Be careful of salespeople that seem to focus on one or two selling points and redirect you to this. They are likely trying to hide some of the things their policies have that you would not like. This is even truer if you are working with an independent sales rep. They work with a number of insurers and each allow for different profit margins. This means that some will try to push you into one policy that gives them more profit even a different company may be better suited to your needs. Before you even shop for insurance check your credit report and correct any inaccuracies then check it again. The insurers feel that if you have bad credit you are likely to establish bad habits on paying your premiums, this drives up their operating cost and of course they want to pass that back to you.
